Wild Rose School Division Announces the Naming of Modernized Breton K-12 School

Wild Rose School Division is pleased to announce that construction is set to begin on the modernization of Breton High School, transforming it into a K-12 facility. On October 15, 2024, the Wild Rose School Division Board of Trustees officially named the modernized school Breton Keystone School. This new name will come into effect once the modernization is complete.

The name was selected following a thoughtful recommendation process initiated by a naming committee, which included administration, staff, and parent representatives from both Breton Elementary and Breton High School, as well as a representative from the local community. Based on feedback from a public survey conducted during the 2023-24 school year, the committee proposed three potential names for the Board’s consideration: Breton Centennial School, Breton Community School and Breton Keystone School.

After careful deliberation, the Board chose Breton Keystone School, a name that honors the rich history of the area. Originally named Keystone in 1909 by African-American settlers from Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, the community played a significant role in Alberta’s early history. Although the town was renamed Breton in 1926, the Board felt that including "Keystone" in the school’s name was a fitting tribute to the community's roots. The Board of Trustees extends its gratitude to the naming committee and the many students, staff, parents and community members who participated in the survey. The Board is thrilled to embark on this significant project, with construction scheduled to begin during the 2024-25 school year.

This modernization marks the fifth major school construction project within Wild Rose School Division in the past seven years. These efforts are part of the Board’s broader capital plan to enhance school utilization rates and ensure that students and staff have access to safe, modern facilities that foster 21st-century learning. The new Breton Keystone School ensures that K-12 public education will continue to serve the Breton community for years to come.
