Student Safety Patrols

Background

Preamble:

The responsibility of preparing school children to live responsibly and safely is a prime objective of our schools. Our schools are committed to educating children in where, how and when to cross the street en route from school to home and from home to school, and at all other times; directing students to cross highways at times when the traffic and traffic signals make it safe to do so and providing opportunities for the development of character, leadership, and cooperative school citizenship.

Procedures

Regulations:

1.      Principals shall ensure that students are taught about where, how and when to cross the street en route from school to home and from home to school, and at all other times;

2.      Students shall be directed to cross highways at times when the traffic and traffic signals make it safe to do so and;

3.      Students shall be provided with opportunities for the development of character, leadership, and cooperative school citizenship.

Guidelines:

1.      School Safety Patrols should be established to service only those crossings in reasonable proximity to the school concerned and where, in the opinion of the local police and/or the Alberta Motor Association and/or Principal, a traffic hazard exists that can be effectively dealt with by means of such patrol.

2.      A school wishing to establish a School Safety Patrol should work with the Alberta Motor Association and the RCMP to assist in organizing such a patrol and in promoting traffic safety through in-school programs.

3.      Principals with Student Safety Patrols programs should develop and implement a school procedure which will include the purpose, establishment, control, supervision, and conduct of such patrols.
